Former Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi picked up the endorsement of Queens Borough President Melinda Katz on Sunday as he made his congressional run official.
Suozzi faces at least three other candidates in a Democratic primary for the seat of Rep. Steve Israel of Huntington, who is stepping down.
Katz, a Democrat, said Suozzi has the experience needed to bring federal dollars back to the district to address local issues like transportation and air traffic noise.
“He has shown himself to be a true fighter, not only for reform, but for legislation and getting things done,” Katz said.
The 3rd Congressional district stretches along the North Shore from Eastern Queens through Nassau to Western Suffolk county, presenting a challenge for Long Island candidates who rise in local politics to gain name recognition in all three counties.
“Queens is a very important part of this race,” Suozzi said. He said he would spend a lot of time in Queens getting to know residents and their issues. “Queens is a place where every single candidate is brand new.”
Earlier in the day, Suozzi appeared at a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast hosted by the Huntington Town Democratic Committee where support was leaning toward Suffolk County Legis. Steve Stern.
